I hear this a lot: “Dr. Justin, isn’t cracking myself the same as a chiropractic correction?”

Of course the answer is no, it is not the same.

“Remember, your cervical spine is an essential part of your body” says Justin the Chiropractor at The Right Chiro. The cervical spine has the task to hold the entire head’s weight, which is approximately up to 5.5 to 7.5 kg, and to balance it above the person’s shoulders. The act of balancing the head needs the stability that is provided by the joints, ligaments, and the discs in a person’s neck.

If a person practices too much neck cracking, mostly when done unsupervised by a licensed professional chiropractor, it slowly loosens the ligaments’ support. This is dangerous as it can lead to instability in the neck area and might cause more damage in the long run.

Although joint cracking is typical, everyone is advised not to crack the neck or backs themselves, especially if experiencing pain or discomfort. This is where chiropractors come in and help in the examination of the neck and back pain or discomfort. Chiropractors help identify the source of the problem and help relieve it through the body’s movement and gentle manipulation.

So what is the cracking sound I hear?

Simply put, gas escaping your joints – Your joints contain some fluids that serve as lubricants between the tissue and bones. The contents of the fluid include oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen.

These fluids are present in your facet joints – or the paired joints in a person’s spine that run downward and upward each side. Air collects between the joints in the form of bubbles. The popping sound is caused by the air bubbles popping with some specific movement. Just like you would pop some bubble wrap.

Cracking the neck might give a person a sense of relief for a while, as endorphins are released, but it is still not recommended to be done by themselves. In fact, you’re constantly having to crack yourself because you’re not actually fixing the problem.

And you have to remember that you are not always lucky to get the right joints to crack. In the long run, improper cracking of the spine might lead to further damage and hyper mobility and eventually osteoporosis.

Chiropractors are licensed professionals that require extensive knowledge of the human body.
Some of our corrections don’t even make noise, but they make a real change.
