Physiotherapists and chiropractors have a slightly different approach to the treatment of a client, so it can be difficult to know which one might be right for you.

Both will approach things from a slightly different perspective but we all have the same aim; to decrease pain and fix an injury, using a drug free and non-invasive approach to improve physical health and well being. We all have different hands on techniques to mobilise joints, decrease muscle tension, free nerves and make sure the body is moving how it was designed to move. We will all try to find the problem rather than just treat the symptom. But where should I start? What is the difference between the two and how do I decide where I should go?

The physiotherapist mainly focuses on muscle, ligaments and joint complaints and the treatment of those. This is the reason why many sports injuries are treated by physios.

They often use a different variety of treatments such as cold lasers, dry needling, massages, taping or electronic shock waves.

A chiropractor does their work mainly by restoring the function of the nervous system by correcting the spine which removes the interference from your nerves. This is vitally important as everything in your body is controlled by your nervous system. So by allowing the nerves to send it’s signals to and from the body freely, the body can function at its best again so you will become or remain in good health.

Less known is that the chiropractor also has all the knowledge and skills to treat muscles. However, what the chiropractor has as an advantage is the additional knowledge of the body. This gives a chiropractor more possibilities. A chiropractor can search to find out if the pain is not caused by something deeper.

Think of a misalignment of a vertebra that causes a wrong posture. That incorrect posture can cause pain.

Let’s take a look at an example, you’re on your way home after a productive day at work, you have an office job where you sit behind your laptop and you go into the office twice a week and work from home the other 3 days. On a beautiful day you drive home and BAM! You get into a car accident. Your car has a big dent in the back but luckily you were wearing your seat belt and have barely a scratch on you. You exchange details with the other person and are on your way back home again, with a soreness in your neck and shoulders. The next day you go to your medical doctor, just to be sure and he sends you to a physiotherapist. The physio assesses the situation and gives you a couple of treatments for your muscles. After a while the pain is a lot less than what it was, but its still slightly there, but you think it’s manageable and continue with your day to day doing. Your neck gets tight again, so you go again, and again. Until one day you’ve had enough.. You want this fixed so it won’t keep coming back every week or so. Someone tells you about a Chiropractor. You decide to give it a shot. Once there they explain how they work, that your nervous system controls everything in your body, including your muscles. It all makes perfectly good sense and you decide to continue with the chiropractic corrections. After a while you also notice how your asthma and hay fever have gone away as well.. You tell your chiropractor, why haven’t I heard of this before? Justin your chiropractor at The Right Chiro Smiles and says “we often hear this question from our clients”

Using a physiotherapist and a chiropractor at the same time can be greatly beneficial, when doing correctly so. However we believe that every man, woman, child and animal (yes your pets as well ! ) should go to a chiropractor, as when your nerves can’t send the correct signals, your body won’t function at its best, including your muscles and ligaments. 😉
