A better understanding of your posture allows you to stay connected to your ability to heal, and gives you a much better chance of a happier, healthier and more fulfilled life.

Your posture is a window showing you your connection to your health. It is an automated function of your nervous system, and changes based on your environment and the stress in it.

I think a lot of us remember being told as we grew up: “stand up straight, look forward when you walk, pin your shoulder blades back”. So much so that these are things I look at when I am walking past a shop window and see myself.

This was helpful advice from our parents and teachers as we all know that’s how we should walk. And of course they helped for a few minutes, but very quickly I would continue walking and get into the routine of my daily life, work, sitting too long or standing still for too long. Then we drive home in our car or when we work from home we migrate from the “office” which is often now your living room to the couch where we slough and watch a bit of tv to wind down. Do you think we keep a perfect posture throughout the rest of the day? Of course not!  This happens, because our posture is automated.

Aside from this, you hear more and more about the importance of posture, how regardless of whether you are sitting, standing or sleeping there is an ideal posture. How easy is it to maintain this “ideal” posture? What do you need to do or buy so that you can support this “ideal” posture for a prolonged period of time?

What is the easiest thing to do? Buying expensive special chairs, special monitors, special shoes, special slings for around your shoulder blades, but ultimately you end up in the same frustrating place that you were in before with someone telling you to stand up straight.

Your posture changes regularly because it needs to, because it is a dynamic interplay between your muscles, ligaments, joints, bones and nervous system. Your muscles are not built to sustain one position for hours, not even for one hour, they work to stabilise your body through contraction and relaxation of antagonistic muscles. Why do you think you move so much when you sleep, because that is what your body needs to do.

So now we know that posture is a dynamic automated function, what can we do to influence our posture for the better?

There is a common law in anatomy called Wolf’s law. This law states that if you do not use it you lose it. The problem with using outside postural support like back straps or an ergonomic chair is that it switches off your dynamic posture. Your nervous system is always looking to conserve energy, so if you have outside postural support, your nervous system will stop those muscles from working. Over time they lose strength and proper tension, and then they lose the proper ability to support you in other postures as well.

And of course there is chiropractic! Chiropractic helps ensure better function of your spinal units (joints, muscles and bones) and your nervous system. Which in turn supports all functions of your nervous system including your posture.

How do you think your life would improve when you have a better posture? When you walk past that store window but this time you see yourself walk up straight with your shoulders back.  You don’t look like you are searching for a penny on the ground.  Or what do you think could happen at work, when you can keep a good posture behind your desk. You would have less back problems, you could get your work done a lot faster, which in time would mean more leisure time or a better financial place. All in all having a better posture would allow you to enjoy your time better.

So the better we understand our posture, the better we stay connected to our ability to heal, and gives you a much better chance of a happier, healthier and more fulfilled life.
