Throughout my life, I have noticed how little guidance there is when it comes to maintaining health for you and your family. What drives me is, to guide my community in making important health decisions that will lead to better health and a better life for you and your family.
Throughout my life, I have noticed how little guidance there is when it comes to maintaining health for you and your family. What drives me is, to guide my community in making important health decisions that will lead to better health and a better life for you and your family.
The battle against pain is waged by thousands of people everyday, without knowing that they are waging the war on themselves. Pain is a consequence of the choices we make in our lives. Every choice you make is either bringing you closer to or further away from harmony with your environment, every choice. Pain, believe it or not, is actually on your side. It is a signal that something needs to change, not necessarily that something is broken.
The way I like to explain it is that your health is the platform of a raft, to be healthy and successful on the river that is your life, everything has to be supported by this platform: your job, your relationships with your family and friends, your hobbies, your running or cycling, fun with your children, your ability to relax, everything rests on the platform. The platform is held up by 4 floats:
So your first responsibility so that your raft (your health) stays steady and does not go underwater, is to support each of the 4 floats and make sure they are well taken care of. The second responsibility on your raft is what you do with your paddle, your paddle is how you choose which river branches (directions in life) to take your boat down.
Each river branch will have its own rapids, slower easier sections, sandbanks and other obstacles (external stressors like tax, difficulty at work, car accident, losing a loved one). If you have been looking after your floats well, most of the time they will keep you out of the water, but there are always moments when the obstacles of life are overwhelming and the water spills over the edge (you experience pain, fatigue, irritability, loose sleep, digestive issues, struggles at work or in your relationships). This is where you need to do work on your floats:
Once your float improves, this means you can now handle blogger and more intense obstacles, GREAT RIGHT!
Sadly this is not a common approach to the “water spilling over the edge” in our lives. The more common approach is to give up your paddle, and worse, the maintenance of your floats to other professionals. We give up our responsibility over our raft (our health) and then blame the raft for the problems that this creates.
I am not saying you shouldn’t ask a professional to help with the raft or float. If you hit a rock and the planks break (accident or serious injury), then getting outside help is good. If you do not know how to blow up or maintain your floats, or how best to paddle or which river branch to take, asking a guide can be good. BUT, you should never give up your paddle or hand over your raft.
Taking pain medication (or any medication in general) is like plugging a hole in your raft or floats with tape. It works well at first, no leaks, feels like it should. Over time the glue diminishes. You can keep trying to reuse the tape, but the time it sticks shortens more and more until it has no effect. Then you have to try doing something more drastic, like adding an extra plank to block it or completely replacing a plank when it was not necessary if you just maintained it (operations on your body).
The moral of the story is that your health is the most important thing in your life, it is what allows you to be productive at work, be present with your family and friends, have happier and more joyful approach to things, run a marathon or do crossfit, take care of your children and loved ones, it is what supports the building of a happy and healthy life. When you learn to take proper responsibility of it; when you learn that the symptoms that you feel (like pain, nausea or fatigue) are messages that you need to do something different to support your health; and that not all healthcare professionals have all the answers and you still need to take their information and make your own choice (even the awesome chiropractors at The Right Chiro) the sooner you will be able to make choices and accept the consequences of those choices: whether that is quick relief but long term problems when using pain medication or going to the chiropractor regularly and having your spine checked and if necessary corrected so you can lead a happier and healthier life.
